Core Rule

Target Lock is the normal ranged attack test used to determine whether shots successfully acquire the target before damage is resolved.

Target Lock Roll

  • Roll a number of dice equal to the relevant weapon’s Rate of Fire, adjusted by any rule that modifies the number of Target Lock rolls.
  • For attacks made by multiple models, roll the appropriate number of dice for each contributing model unless another rule states otherwise.
  • Each roll equal to or under the attacker’s relevant targeting attribute is a successful Target Lock unless another rule states otherwise.

Attribute Use

Unless another rule explicitly states otherwise, ranged Target Lock rolls use the attacker’s Resolve value.

Critical Interaction

If a Target Lock result triggers Critical Damage, resolve that Critical Damage according to core/critical_damage.md.

For standard ranged attacks, a roll of 1 is the default Target Lock result that causes Critical Damage unless prevented or changed by another rule.

Modifiers

  • Apply any relevant targeting modifiers before determining success unless another rule states otherwise.
  • Rules that modify the number of Target Lock dice, success thresholds, or re-rolls should define that behavior in their owning file and reference this file rather than redefining Target Lock itself.

Cover Interaction

If Cover removes, prevents, or forces the re-roll of a Target Lock result, resolve that interaction according to core/cover.md and any relevant weapon or command rules.

Damage Interaction

Each successful Target Lock proceeds to damage resolution according to core/damage.md unless the relevant rule states otherwise.

Target Limit is owned by core/damage.md; Target Lock supplies the successful results that damage uses to determine that limit.

Command Interaction

Commands may allow, restrict, or modify Target Lock rolls, but command declaration, timing, and restrictions are not defined here.

Notes

  • This file defines the Target Lock test, not which commands allow shooting.
  • Weapon traits, Snap Fire, and Cover should reference this file where they alter normal Target Lock behavior.
