Core Rules

Target Lock

Target Lock determines whether a ranged attack successfully acquires its target before rolling damage. Roll dice based on the weapon's Rate of Fire; each roll equal to or lower than the attacker's Resolve is normally successful.

Making Target Lock rolls

When a model makes a ranged attack:

  1. Find the weapon's Rate of Fire, or RoF.
  2. Apply any rule that changes the number of Target Lock dice.
  3. Roll that many dice for each model contributing the attack, unless another rule says otherwise.
  4. Compare each result with the attacker's targeting attribute.

A roll equal to or lower than the targeting attribute is a successful Target Lock. Unless another rule says otherwise, use the attacker's Resolve as that attribute.

Modifiers and re-rolls

Apply any relevant targeting modifiers before deciding whether a Target Lock succeeds. Rules that change the number of dice, the success value, or any re-rolls apply as instructed by those rules.

Critical Damage

For a normal ranged attack, a Target Lock roll of 1 causes Critical Damage unless another rule prevents or changes that result. Resolve the Critical Damage using the normal Critical Damage rules.

Cover

Cover may remove, prevent, or force a re-roll of Target Lock results. Apply the relevant Cover effect and any weapon or command effects in their required order.

Moving on to damage

Each successful Target Lock proceeds to damage unless another rule says otherwise. For a ranged attack, the number of successful Target Locks also determines its Target Limit: the maximum number of models that its normal damage can affect unless another rule changes that limit.

Example

Three models fire the same RoF 2 weapon, so the player rolls six Target Lock dice. The models use Resolve 4 and roll 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The rolls of 1, 2, 3, and 4 produce four successful Target Locks. The roll of 1 also causes Critical Damage under the normal rule. The four successful Target Locks then proceed to damage and give the ranged attack a Target Limit of four unless another rule changes it.

Frequently asked questions

How many Target Lock dice do I roll?

Normally, roll a number of dice equal to the weapon's Rate of Fire for each model contributing to the attack, after applying any modifiers.

What attribute is used for Target Lock?

Use the attacker's Resolve unless another rule specifies a different targeting attribute.

What number is needed for a successful Target Lock?

A result equal to or lower than the targeting attribute is successful.

What happens when a Target Lock roll is 1?

For a normal ranged attack, it causes Critical Damage unless another rule prevents or changes that result.

What happens after a successful Target Lock?

It proceeds to damage unless another rule says otherwise. The number of successful Target Locks also sets the ranged attack's normal Target Limit.
