General Rules

Distances

Use the closest points of models when checking how far apart they are. If any part of a model is within the distance allowed by a rule, that model is considered within range.

Measuring distance

When measuring between two models, measure from the closest point of one model to the closest point of the other.

Being within range

A model is within a stated distance if any part of that model is inside that distance. This method is used for weapon range and for rules that affect nearby models or units.

Vertical distance

Include vertical distance when a model moves upward unless another rule says otherwise. Moving downward does not normally add to the distance travelled.

Proximity effects

When a rule affects models or units within a certain distance, use the shortest valid distance between them unless that rule gives a different measuring method.

Example

An ability affects enemy models within 6 inches. The closest point of an enemy model's base is 5.8 inches away, even though the centre of that model is farther than 6 inches away. Because part of the model is within 6 inches, it is affected by the ability.

Frequently asked questions

Do I measure from the centre of a model?

No. Measure between the closest points of the models unless another rule says otherwise.

What does 'within' a distance mean?

A model is within the distance if any part of it is inside that distance.

How do I measure an effect that reaches nearby units?

Use the shortest valid distance between the relevant models or units unless the effect gives another method.

Is upward distance included?

Yes when moving upward, unless another rule says otherwise.
