Core Rule
A model is engaged when it is within the engagement distance of an enemy model, as defined by the normal engagement rules.
Engagement State
- A model is engaged if it is within 1 inch of an enemy model.
- A unit is engaged if one or more of its models are engaged, where the relevant rules treat engagement at unit level.
- A model may be engaged with more than one enemy model or enemy unit at the same time.
- A unit may be engaged with more than one enemy unit at the same time.
Determining Engagement
- Engagement is determined from the current battlefield position of models.
- Engagement is not limited by which unit declared the current command.
- If movement, charge, casualty removal, or another rule changes model positions, re-check engagement using the updated battlefield state.
Effects of Engagement
- Engaged models may be restricted from making ranged attacks unless a rule explicitly states otherwise.
- Engaged models are eligible for melee interaction according to the close combat rules.
- Any additional engagement-based restrictions should reference this file rather than redefining engagement elsewhere.
Multi-Unit Engagement
- If a model is within 1 inch of enemy models from multiple units, it is engaged with all relevant enemy units.
- If a charge, Intervene, or another rule causes contact with multiple enemy units, apply engagement to all relevant units created by that contact.
- Engagement itself does not choose attack targets or resolve melee order unless another rule states otherwise.
Resolution Notes
- Engagement is a game state, not a command.
- Close combat uses engagement but does not own the definition of engagement.
- Shooting may reference engagement restrictions, but does not define engagement.
Notes
- This file defines engagement only.
- Use
core/close_combat.mdfor melee resolution. - Use
core/shooting.mdfor shooting legality and attack resolution.
