Vehicles
Vehicles
Vehicles follow the normal rules unless a vehicle rule gives a specific exception. Their profiles add Shield, facings, systems and Field of Fire, which affect how they defend, shoot and suffer damage.
Using a vehicle
Vehicles follow the normal movement, shooting, melee, targeting and timing rules unless a vehicle rule specifically changes them.
A vehicle profile may show:
- Move: how far it normally moves.
- Shield: its main defensive value for vehicle checks.
- Resolve and HP: values used when a vehicle rule specifically asks for them.
- Facings: the sides of the hull used by Field of Fire and system damage.
- Weapons and Field of Fire: the weapons it can use and where their Line of Sight is measured from.
Defending a vehicle
Use modified Shield when a vehicle rule calls for Shield and modifiers apply. Do not replace Resolve or HP with Shield unless the rule being resolved tells you to do so.
Important vehicle differences
- Vehicle Damage replaces normal damage against vehicles unless a rule says otherwise.
- Critical Damage uses the Vehicle Damage procedure with the vehicle damage die treated as its maximum result.
- Each point of Sustained Damage reduces the vehicle's Shield by 1.
- Grievous Damage does not affect a vehicle unless a rule explains how it applies.
- Vehicles do not receive Cover bonuses and ignore Cover bonuses on their targets.
- The vehicle's facings determine Field of Fire source points and which system can be damaged.
Read the relevant vehicle rule whenever one of these differences applies. Otherwise, continue using the normal game rule.
Example
A vehicle with Shield 4 is targeted by a ranged attack. The attack follows the normal targeting and shooting rules, but any damage is resolved with Vehicle Damage instead of the infantry damage procedure. If the vehicle later suffers 1 Sustained Damage, its Shield is reduced to 3 until that damage is removed or another rule changes it.
Frequently asked questions
- Do vehicles use completely separate game rules?
-
No. Use the normal rules unless a vehicle rule gives a specific exception.
- Does Shield replace every use of Resolve?
-
No. Use Shield only when the vehicle rule calls for it. Vehicles still use Resolve and HP for procedures that name those values.
- Do vehicles benefit from Cover?
-
No. Vehicles do not gain Cover bonuses and ignore Cover bonuses on their targets.
- How is damage against a vehicle resolved?
-
Use Vehicle Damage instead of normal damage unless a specific rule says otherwise.
- What do vehicle facings affect?
-
They determine Field of Fire source points for weapons and the system type affected by vehicle damage.
